History of IKTINOS

Since 1995, the Institute of Korean Theological Information Network Service (IKTINOS) has distinguished itself as a public platform to streamline the theological database of S. Korea to cater to the needs of church leaders and academicians. The institute has cataloged abstracts of the theological literature of S. Korean that spans nearly 120 years.

In an effort to expand its horizon, the institute published the first issue of The Journal of Bible Sarangbang in 1997. Since the beginning, the journal introduced notable new publications that combined a sophisticated biblical hermeneutics with preaching, ministry, and culture in the wake of the new millennium. At the same time, the institute began to host academic seminars where newly emerging PhD scholars from the Western world could present their dissertations and served to introduce innovative scholarly researches in S. Korea. The first scholar to present in the institution’s academic seminar was Dr. Ju Hur (ACTS), whose work was published with The Journal of Bible Sarangbang in Spring 1999 (Volume 7).

The Journal of Bible Sarangbang was discontinued in 2001 with Volume 16 and was relaunched under a new title Hermenia Today, which addresses the most recent trends in biblical exegesis and preaching. Since then, presentations from the academic seminars hosted by the institution were published in the journal. In time for the centennial anniversary of the Great Revival of Pyongyang in 2007, Hermenia Today distinguished itself as a journal for the preachers.

Canon and Culture, which was first issued in 2007, features academic articles (in English and Korean) in biblical/theological studies with particular attention to a cross-cultural engagement. The journal seeks to function as an interpretive hub of East and West to facilitate conversations among scholars of various backgrounds as we witness accelerated globalization on an unprecedented scale.

In 2010, Canon and Culture was registered with the NRF (National Research Fund) with a candidate status and was fully registered with NRF since 2015. Since 2019, it has been indexed by ATLA (RDB) with full-texts.
